Vancouver Art Gallery
Envisioning a purpose-built home for a gallery woven with community
Collaborators: Herzog & de Meuron, Perkins&Will, ARUP
One of the most significant cultural projects undertaken in Canada to date, the Vancouver Art Gallery sought to build a new home in the heart of downtown Vancouver with Herzog & De Meuron—a model for what a 21st century museum can be through ambitious and authentic community engagement and connection. Anchored at the intersection of four vibrant neighborhoods, adjacent to a busy metro station, and within a growing cultural precinct, the design ambition demanded a signage and wayfinding system that supported the gallery’s diverse programming and amenities to tourists, locals, and passers-through alike. Once–Future led stakeholder engagement, strategy, and schematic location planning for the 9-story, 300,000-square-foot mass timber building. We developed navigation, integration, materiality, and storytelling strategies that will serve as a foundation for analog and digital experiences in future design phases.
